Teen Specialist - Main Library - Full-Time Richland County Public Library

Salary: $14.94/hour to start; This is a full-time job [40 hours/week]

POSITION SUMMARY: Under direct supervision of the Adult Services Administrator, the Teen Specialist works with Teen Librarians to plan and present programs and to provide ancillary services to teens. The Teen Specialist is also expected to assist teens with materials selection, collaborate with parents, teachers and community organizations, and to advocate for teen services, programming and initiatives. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate facility working with teens, parents, teachers, caregivers, staff, external program providers and others involved with the work of the Library.

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field is required. (Master’s degree in Library Science is preferred. Candidates presenting with MLS degree would be interviewed as Teen Librarian with additional responsibilities and at higher pay grade.)
  • Experience working in public library setting with children or teens is preferred
  • Demonstrable ability in reference service, including electronic retrieval
  • Working knowledge of Dewey Decimal system is required.
  • Extensive experience and advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office, internet and email
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • Must be experienced and comfortable working alone and in a team environment
  • Must have advanced facility with a variety of social media and digital formats along with devices used by customers, like IPad, tablets, eReaders, smart phones and the like
  • Reliability and above average work attendance with ability to work flexible schedule including day, evening and weekend hours
  • Physical requirements: Engage in extended periods of sitting, standing, typing and viewing computer monitors, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting/turning and stretching to shelve and retrieve materials throughout the library on shelves of varying heights from above shoulders to below knees. Engage in intermittent periods of climbing stairs, lifting and carrying equipment and materials occasionally weighing 40 – 60 pounds and pushing loaded book trucks weighing 75 - 100 pounds or more on tile or carpet. Must be able to use hands and fingers to grasp, handle and manipulate materials and operate tools and controls, including computers, phones and office equipment. Occasionally required to get on hands and knees to look for materials that have fallen under the shelves or stand on step stool 14 ½ inches high to reach upper shelves.

  • Valid vehicle operator’s license is required, with acceptable driving record and current vehicle insurance. Travel within Richland County is required.
